Women's Empowerment Scholarship

Women who have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and related forms of abuse, need a multitude of diverse resources to fully recover.  We believe that education is among the resources that can play a vital role in helping survivors find pathways to a new life. With that belief, the Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women created the Women's Empowerment Scholarship Program. It is our ultimate plan to establish five scholarships for undergraduate students.

  • At the present time, the OPSVAW has one WES.  It is currently held by a student.  Visit this website next year to see if additional scholarships are available.
  • At the University, the OPSVAW partners with the UK Office of Financial Aid to assist WES recipients in accessing the maximum financial support available; and the Office of Undergraduate Education to provide academic advising to give them the best opportunity for academic success.
  • We also partner with the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs as any recipient of the Women's Empowerment Scholarship must have been served by one of those programs.

The first scholarship offered through the OPSVAW Women’s Empowerment Scholarship Program is the Verizon Wireless Women's Empowerment Scholarship. Verizon Wireless is recognized across the country for its commitment to increasing public understanding of domestic violence.  The company’s commitment to women started in 1995 when it created a HopeLine Program which collects used wireless phones that they refurbish and sell; profits are used to support domestic violence programs and nonprofit organizations focused on domestic violence.

The Women's Empowerment Scholarship made available through the Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women is currently held by a freshmen student at the University.  The first recipient held the Women's Empowerment Scholarship for three years, graduated in May 2016, and is now undertaking graduate work.

Check back at this site to see when another WES will be available. While the scholarship is currently filled, if you would like to see the application form, please click here. Additional information on the scholarship is also available in the box to the left.
