Director's Letter

Dear Friends:

Women who have experienced intimate partner violence, rape or sexual abuse, dating violence, or stalking at some point during their lives need a multitude of diverse resources to fully recover. The UK Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women (OPSVAW) believes that post-secondary education is among the resources that can help survivors find pathways to healthy and violence-free lives. With that belief, we created the Women’s Empowerment Scholarship Program (WES).

The WES gives women access to education as a means of escaping violence and abuse or diminishing the effects of child or adulthood victimization. The OPSVAWs goal is to fund five Empowerment Scholarships. Verizon Wireless became the first generous donor to support the Scholarship Program with a $100,000 donation from its HopeLine phone-recycling program.  With that gift, the OPSVAW established one WES which is now available to survivors.

This web page provides the application materials for the Verizon Wireless Women’s Empowerment Scholarship.  Survivors interested in applying should check the tool bar on this page to fully understand the eligibility guidelines and deadlines. All WES applications must be submitted online.

If you have any questions about the Women’s Empowerment Scholarship, I hope you will not hesitate to be in contact with me at carol.jordan@uky.edu

Best Wishes,

Carol E. Jordan, Executive Director

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women
