Director of OPSVAW Among Legislators and Advocates Receiving Awards from the KY Nonprofit Network

February 1, 2018.  The Kentucky Nonprofit Network (KNN), the state association of nonprofit organizations, presented legislators and legislative advocates with awards as part of its 13th annual Kentucky Nonprofit Day at the Capitol in Frankfort.

Among the bills highlighted by the KNN were House Bill 309 that provided leasing protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking and Senate Bill 86 that replaced domestic violence mandatory reporting with education and referral resources. The bills were proposed by the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence and sponsored by Rep. Melinda Gibbons Prunty of Belton and Sen. Ralph Alvarado of Winchester.  Carol Jordan, executive director of the University of Kentucky Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women was also recognized because she served as a senior policy consultant to the Coalition to aid in advancing SB 96, using findings from her research to testify and inform legislators on the bill.

Awards were also given to Rep. Tom Burch and Sen. Julie Raque Adams and advocates involved in passage of “Tim’s Law” which allows a judge to order outpatient treatment for up to a year for individuals unable to recognize the severity of their mental illness. The Kentucky Association of Food Banks of Berea was also recognized for legislation that increases resources for food banks.

Partnering with Kentucky Nonprofit Network to host Kentucky Nonprofit Day at the Capitol were the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges & Universities,, Centerstone Kentucky, Family & Children’s Place, Fund for the Arts, Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, Homeless & Housing Coalition of Kentucky, Hosparus Health, Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, LexArts, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, New Directions Housing Corporation, Opportunity for Work & Learning Foundation, Passport Health Plan, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence and University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation.
